New benefit for customers with disabled children

A new benefit has been introduced by the Scottish Government to help parents of children with a disability or ill health.

New Child Disability Benefit introduced by the Scottish Government

Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for children has been replaced in Scotland by the Child Disability Benefit. It is paid to parents or carers of disabled children up to the age of 16.

The new benefit is a devolved benefit, and will be paid by Social Security Scotland rather than the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

People who already receive DLA for children don’t need to apply for the new benefit, and will be paid the same amount on the same date.

People who don’t receive DLA for children can apply for the new Child Disability Benefit if their child has a health condition, mental, emotional or physical disability, or behavioural issues – even if the child’s condition hasn’t been diagnosed yet.

If you think you may qualify, get in touch and our welfare benefits advisors can check if you’re eligible and help you apply.

Kirsty Ward, Group Universal Credit Lead, said: “We always want our customers to claim all the welfare benefits and tax credits they’re entitled to.

“It’s important customers don’t miss out, so anyone who thinks they may qualify for the new Child Disability Benefit should get in touch.

“Our welfare benefits advisors can help customers apply for this, and any other benefits they’re due. We are always here to help.”

If you think you may be eligible for the new Child Disability Benefit, talk to your housing officer or give us a phone.
